Genealogy or 'Tracing Your Family History' has always been a popular pastime. In recent years, the advent of the internet, simple-to-use genealogy software and the increasing availability and accessibility of official information from sources such as the Public Records Office (PRO) and the Family Records Centre (FRC) have all encouraged and accelerated the level of interest in the hobby. It is not surprising, therefore, that genealogy has become one of the world's fastest growing pastimes and has recently become the second most popular reason for researching on the internet.
There are increasing numbers and sources of relevant family history information becoming available from more and more organisations. In addition, Birmingham is fortunate in having some of the best sources of family history information through its superb libraries, archives and various organisations and associations so it is not surprising that more and more Brummies are exploring the family trees of their Birmingham ancestors and other famous Brummies. We are keen to encourage and promote this interest in the genealogy of our Brummie forebears and in the future we plan to provide such information as: a beginner's guide to the genealogy research process, where to find sources of relevant information, details of other useful organisations and web sites, tips and hints to simplify or accelerate your research process, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about genealogy research and reviews of useful genealogy books and software. Who knows, perhaps sometime in the not too distant future we will be able to use the results of some of our reader's ancestral research and include a few examples of famous or interesting Brummie family trees?
