Long long ago, a little boy.....Long long ago, a little boy (ME) sat nervously wondering what a student teacher, who was new at our school, was going to do with us kids. We were totally at his mercy, but he began to tell us a story. Once a week we would gather round him, and he read from a book to us, in a deep but gentle voice. The story conjured up great excitement in me and always left me feeling disappointed when the end of the lesson came. The student teacher left the school without finishing the book, at the time, I was uncertain of proper name, and my reading choice turned to other things. Years later I picked up that book and begun to read it unawares it was the same book, it again fired my sense of imagination, and I was surprised at finding my beloved story. That book was and is, called The Hobbit or as that student teacher called it, There And Back Again by the late, great J.R.R. Tolkien.
Tolkien had sat one day working on some boring school papers,
his boredom led to some literary doodling, and he scribbled a
single line of text
"In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit". A
fantasy legend was born.
I understand in some circles it is believed Tolkien
wrote the books from an interesting perspective, seeing
himself as being the editor of ancient manuscripts
originally written by Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
Tolkien IS! the father of Modern Fantasy and many authors
have copied him over the years. He was well ahead of his
time, in his style and storytelling capabilities. I wish I
had a pound for every time I have read "Comparable to
Tolkien at his best" on the reviews and critiques of
later fantasy books, I would be a very rich man. It is
worthy of note that most of the books referred to are a sad
reflection of the great mans work.
The Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings are the real thing. Good stories, that have you on the edge of your seat, the pages turn themselves with no effort required by the reader to enjoy. The stories are about magic, but they have real magic too, for they enchant you, and enslave you. I have Re-read them time and time again over the last 30 years. Enthralled is perhaps a way of describing my mood when re-reading Lord of the Rings. You may, or may not agree with my opinions of Tolkien, but his books have captivated many thousands of children and adults across the whole globe.
