Currys Ltd
Opening of their first Superstore at 5-11 Martineau Way, Union Street above Littlewoods.  The Littlewoods Building had a roof top car park (it may still be in use)? cars were taken up and down by two lifts in the entrance to service bay.

Currys Broad Street branch, closed when new superstore opened. The Broad Street branch near Five Ways was the only branch at that time that had not been modernised in the 1960's and remained open until the opening of the new superstore.

N.B.

If you don't remember pre decimalisation and the Guinea you need to know that
20 Shillings = 1
12d = 1 Shilling
240d = 1
1 Guinea = 21 Shillings or 1.05 in today's money
1 Shilling = 5p

The average weekly wage was about 18 a week and we did not need calculators to add up the money!

If you like old adverts and photographs of Birmingham in the fifties you will enjoy these books which are packed with hundreds of pictures and adverts.
