This book describes and illustrates some of the most historically
important architecture to be seen in Birmingham today, and will serve as
a useful guide for those wishing to explore and learn more about the
city's history through its buildings. The book started life as the
teaching notes for a class called 'Building History', an adult education
class at the University of Birmingham. Over the years those notes have
been refined, added to and corrected, with the help students, to become
the fine work of architectural history that it is today. Readable, educational and above all, interesting, Peter Leather's Buildings of Birmingham will be of great interest to residents of Birmingham, but also to all those who are interested in architecture, its development, and its role in the history of our cities. Local history buffs are also in for another treat with this latest series from Tempus. |

This new collection of old photographs and postcards takes the reader on a fascinating tour of the Small Heath and Sparkbrook areas of Birmingham. Both mainly working class suburbs, during the twentieth centaury they formed an important industrial centre with companies like B.S.A. and Allday & Onions making a vital contribution to the war effort in the 1940's. However this also made Small Heath a target for Luftwaffe bombers which led to much tragedy and devastation. Images of people at work are complemented by scenes depicting the leisure activities of Small Heath folk, from shopping on the Coventry Road to watching Birmingham City play at St Andrew's. This superb collection of over 200 archive images, while guaranteed to
fascinate bus enthusiasts, will also have huge appeal to the many
thousands who have traveled the inner circle route or who simply have an
interest in the history of Birmingham. Introduced in 1928, operating
continuously ever since, the No.8 was known as the 'Workmen's Special',
as it served the workers for some of Birmingham best-known employers.
Businesses such as Lucas, Ansells Brewery, HP Sauce and B.S.A. all stood
along the route, and the No.8 provided the transport to and from work
each day. Today busses on the route have been reduced from double
deckers such as the Daimler CVG6's and Leyland Titans to modern single
deckers with low floors and quieter engines. Click here to Buy now online from Amazon only 10.99 |
